From 14 February till 16 February the The XV AISV conference “Audio archives at the crossroads of Speech Sciences, Digital Humanities and Digital Heritage” (AIVS2019) takes place at the Department of Education, human sciences and intercultural communication in Arezzo, Italy.
Speech and oral archives are common in different disciplines within the humanities, from the various fields of linguistics and speech technologies, to oral history, ethnography, sociology, anthropology, and psychology. They contain vast amounts of information relevant to social sciences and humanities but at the same time they are underutilized material in the intangible cultural heritage domain. Crucially, the fragmentation of archives, repositories, and data centres undermines he accessibility and reuse of oral archives.
Keynote talk and CLARIN Tutorial
The XV AISV conference aims at discussing possibilities for a closer collaboration between speech scientists, speech technologists and oral historians. Because it involves people from both Speech Sciences and Oral History, it is the ideal setting for the CLARIN tutorial entitled “Creating, Managing and Analysing Speech Databases using BAS Services and Emu” by Florian Schiel and Christopher Draxler and the keynote talk on "Spoken Word Archives as Societal and Cultural Data" by Franciska de Jong.
The CLARIN Tutorial will be held on 14 February from 10:00u-11:00u and the keynote talk will be held on Friday 15 February form 9.00 -10.00.
Goal
In 2015, a workshop entitled “Oral History meets linguistics was held at the University of Freiburg . The workshops aim was to bring together linguistic approaches to oral histories in different target languages and discussing possibilities for a closer collaboration between linguists and oral historians. It is a matter of urgency that Linguistics also meets Oral History. Therefore, the goal of the event can be summarized as follows:
- enhance the collaboration between speech scientists and oral
- address the challenges posed by realistic (historic) speech data in the automatic transcription and speech recognition domain.
