Corpora in Social Sciences and Humanities

, - ,

There has been an increasing interest in bringing corpus linguistics methods to different areas of social sciences and humanities research. This trend is partly motivated by the availablity of electronic language collections which sociologists, literary scholars, historians and psychologists use as a potential source of data in their research. The purpose of this special thematic session is to provide an overview of a variety of corpus-based and computational tools, resources and techniques which open new possibilities of language data exploration in those disciplines. We invite paper presentations demonstrating possible applications of corpus analysis tools and methodologies in the exploration of electronic language data in social sciences and humanities.

The session will be initiated with a plenary lecture by Professor Ian Gregory, Lancaster University, and will also feature a series of presentations of the results of the CLARIN-PL project, which showcase the value of corpus data in social sciences and humanities.
