Summary of main topic and goals
Technology giants such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook all work with language data and the demand for research skills in language-related domains is constantly growing. University curricula, however, are rarely oriented towards the digital skills needed in research and industry jobs. As a result, students tend to be poorly prepared for research or industry careers.
The central goal of the UPSKILLS project is to identify and tackle the gaps in digital skills through the development of a new curriculum component and supporting the embedding of adequate materials in existing programmes. The project consortium will work together with companies to cover real-world tasks and scenarios of technology use in the studies. We will integrate existing research into teaching by promoting inquiry-based learning, and by organising training of the trainers. Internationalisation will be promoted between higher education institutions by offering a unified curriculum component across several countries and through multiplier events aimed at participants from 20+ countries.
The project will result in a new profile of graduates in language-related disciplines, who will fit well in contemporary professional environments, both in industry and academia. The project outcomes will have an impact far beyond the members of the project consortium. Ultimately, the project will lead to better job prospects for students in language-related disciplines and beyond, a smoother transition to the world of work, and a better work force for industry and research.
CLARIN in the Project
CLARIN's role in the workplan CLARIN is contributing to the following tasks: needs analysis, integrating RIs into teaching for (i) language data standards and repositories and (ii) text and speech processing, and dissemination of the created learning content, a.o. by organising a multiplier event.
